Without further ado, here is the video I promised of the Young Mom Summit. If you weren’t in attendance, you missed out!

Be sure to join the mailing list so you’ll be first to hear when we’re coming to your area!

It’s A Wrap! The First Young Mom Summit Was A Success!

Part 1 of the recap – watch for part two tomorrow!

When I tell you all that my heart is full and that the Young Mom Summit was everything I hoped it would be….

When I tell you that I was so touched by the amount of love and admiration between attendees….

When I tell you that I couldn’t believe how dope my presenters were, even though I handpicked them myself…

When I tell you that I looked at the youngest attendee there and could see her laughing with her mom as her babies kicked inside her belly…

It was EPIC. There is simply no other way to describe it.

Everything was amazing but I tell you what – the women who showed up for the Young Mom Summit were so eager to hear from the speakers and to partake in the day’s activities. I’m so honored that they chose to spend their day with me! It means so much for each and every one of them to show up for the first realization of my vision!

The speakers were incredible. I was sitting there taking notes like I wasn’t the one who put this whole day together!

Me and Adrianne, from SameStoryDifferentFace.com! She flew in from Philly, along with her friend Courtney, to support me at my first offline event and it meant so much to me. You better believe she’s got 100% support from me on whatever she does next! (By the way, do check out her site. She does amazing events for young single moms and if you are in the area, you should attend!)

Esha Ansari, director of the teen parent group Cleveland YoungLives, presented an informative and relatable session on stress management. I know a few attendees who have already put some of her tips to use!

Six tips: Figure out where stress is coming from, figure out what is in your control, do what you love, manage your time well, have boundaries, and pack a “de-stress” toolkit

Beverly Davis, a financial education manager at Key Bank, gave us all a chance for a real-life money make-over. She talked about budgeting realistically, the importance of an emergency fund (strive to have at least $1,000) and so much more!

Arlice Nichole of the savvy AWomansWorthOnline.com gave each participant a handout to help them identify their passion and leave with three action steps they could take to get closer to their goals. She rocked it.

I’ll have more updates this week, but I wanted to spill some details on the event quickly because it was a great day. Attendees had fun, the raffles were awesome and I am so proud of myself for overcoming one of my biggest fears—taking YML from strictly an online brand to one that exists (and thrives) in the “real world.”

I honestly can’t wait for the next one. And that is such a great feeling to have!

Why You Should Attend The Young Mom Summit

teen-mother1 (1)

I’m too chubby, I thought to myself as I looked in the mirror. I was six days post-partum, and I was debating whether my self-esteem was high enough for me to go back to class and take my final exam like I had discussed with my professors.

My stomach was still round and full. As a first-time mother, I had been under the mistaken impression that I would “snap back” much faster. They’re going to still think I’m pregnant, I thought, as I considered how my classmates might react to my return to the classroom.

Of course, no one said anything when I went to take my final and I went on to get a 4.0 that semester.

When I think back to being pregnant in college and how clueless I was about my rights as a student or what resources were available, it’s amazing I graduated at all. I’ve learned so much about what it means to be resilient during that time of my life and I always said that if I had the opportunity to give back and help other young parents, I would do it.

The Young Mom Summit is my opportunity to give back.

Too often, young parents struggle to find the support they seek, even when it’s available in the community and in their own families. My goal is to help young parents connect those dots, and have a little fun while doing it.

The summit is a half day full of workshops, fun giveaways, raffles and friend-making. No one makes it through parenthood alone and if it takes a village, then let’s take the first step in creating one.

If you’re interested in coming to the summit (it’s FREE!), you can register here. Tell a friend. Send her this link. Share it on Facebook. Tweet the link. We appreciate your support.

Young Mom Summit

The Young Mom Summit is the brainchild of Tara Pringle Jefferson, a former student-parent who was frustrated at the lack of resources and support for parenting students.

In May 2013, she graduated with her Master’s in Family Studies from Kent State University. Her thesis, Challenges, Opportunities and Sources of Support for Undergraduate Mothers Attending College at a Four-Year Institution, examined the lives of five student-parents. Building off her research, she created the Young Mom Summit, a one-day support symposium for parenting students.

The first Young Mom Summit will be held in Kent, Ohio, in November 2013. Stay tuned for more details.

VIDEO: Young Mom Summit | Episode 4 | Co-Parenting 101

co-parenting 101

Once I heard that Deesha Philyaw and her ex-husband Mike Thomas were going to be writing a book on co-parenting peacefully, I knew I had to get at least one of them to do an interview and share what they’ve learned over the years.

The two are the creators of Co-parenting101.org, a one-stop-shop for all things co-parenting related. If you want to know about custody agreements, difficult exes, and strategies to keep the peace, they have it for you. I’ve been following their site for years and recommending it to every young mother I know.

Episode 4 of the Young Mom Summits is for the co-parenting mama (or daddy) who is looking for advice on how to navigate the rocky parts of no longer being a twosome but still being a family. Thanks to all who submitted questions!
