I’m Running A 5K Next Month. Someone Hold Me.

Last summer I told you all about my quest to become a runner. The goal was to have something that a stress relief for me, a way to lose some of this damn baby weight that’s STILL hanging around (ugh), and to get my days off to a better start.

But what happened? The same thing that always happens. I start working out, it seems to be working and I like it, but then life gets busy and I postpone a workout or I get hurt and I postpone a workout to recover and I never get back to it. Now, I’ve been exercising weekly since December (yes, you read that right – one workout a week. LOL). But it’s doing nothing to get me in the shape I’d like to be in.

So I was on my school’s website and remembered that they have two 5Ks that they host each year. Sure enough, I go check and the race is April 14. As in, a month from when I wrote this post.

I signed up.

Now I have no excuse. I must train, I must regularly get some running in and I must do this race. I’m not looking to win, but looking to just finish it. A concrete goal is what I need to help me get over this exercise hump and lose a couple pounds while I’m at it.

Anyone have any advice for me? I’m all ears!

  1. YAY for you!! I signed up for a 10K. Crazy right? Mine is not until july though! You can do it!!!!!

  2. Hooray! Congrats! Now you have something to train for. Have you heard of the Couch To 5k program (most people call it C25k)? It’s a great place to start if you haven’t been running at all – it starts with walking to jogging to running! Otherwise, Runnersworld has great training programs (free) for all levels and races. You can do it!!

  3. Good for you! Like I said before, I am with you. You must realize it is mindset. Being healthy and fit starts with the mind first….that is your foundation for a healthy lifestyle. If it helps think outside yourself. For me, I want my kids to be proud of me. Thats more motivation than I can give myself.

  4. You will do fine.. THis will motivate you to continue to be consistent. That’s what running did for me..So many times I would try and slack on my workouts but when I signed up it held me responsible… You’ve got this!!!

  5. Good for you! I’ve started working out again and very impressed with the Black Girls Run Campaign and how many of them are getting involved. Cheers to you!!!

  6. The couch 2 5K plan is great. I think you will need to squeeze in a a run at least 3 times a week to be ready. You will be so proud of yourself as you cross the finish line! Good luck!

  7. You can do it. Because of the short training time frame you’ll probably be sore afterward. Don’t let that deter though you from doing another 5k.
