From The Vault: Why Won’t You Ask For Help?

This mama is going on a bit of a break this holiday season, but don’t fret! In between some of the new content, I’m revisiting some of my most popular posts for the newbies to our community. This piece was originally published June 2010, right before I started graduate school.  Got my letters of recommendation handy, my $30 application fee, and my written statement so I’m all ready to apply to … [Continue reading...]

{In The Kitchen} What’s For Dinner December 31-January 6

I have to say, this winter break has been wonderful. My husband has been home the past week and a half, I've been catching up on much needed sleep, and I've been enjoying not having to venture out in the freezing cold to take my kids to school. We've been cuddling up inside, with hot chocolate and lots of baked goods — our life really resembles some type of fairy tale life, that I wish we could … [Continue reading...]

From The Vault: The Sacrifices We Make For Our Kids? Totally Worth It

Growing up, if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have told you that I wanted to be editor-in-chief of Essence magazine. Like, that was the only goal. For a young black girl, seeing the beautiful covers featuring beautiful black women gave me a reason to smile and celebrate being me. I wanted to be the person who put it together every month, who crafted the direction of … [Continue reading...]

From The Vault: An Interview With Two Teen Moms Turned Medical Students

This mama is going on a bit of a break this holiday season, but don’t fret! In between some of the new content, I’m revisiting some of my most popular posts for the newbies to our community. This piece was originally published June 2011.  I meet a lot of fabulous women on this blog. It is probably one of the top two reasons why I keep on posting every day. I get inspired and uplifted by your … [Continue reading...]

2013: The Year Of Abundance

Each year, I pick a word that will drive me for the next 364 days. In 2011, my word was "focus." In 2012, I chose "purpose." This year, "abundance" is the word I'm sticking with. I chose abundance for several reasons. One, as a freelancer/self-employed person, it is very easy to get discouraged, sometimes on a weekly basis. Checks are late, deadlines are short and bills pile high. I wanted to … [Continue reading...]

The Top 10 Posts For 2012 (And What I Thought Should Have Been The Top 10 Posts!)

I tell ya, sometimes I write a post and I'm convinced it will "go viral." "Ah, yes," I say to myself, stroking my chin. I hit Publish. "Yeah, this will bring all the mamas to the yard." And then nothing. Crickets. Tumbleweeds all through my comments section. But then another post, one where I'm rambling and not making sense and venting and letting emotion seep through every keystroke, … [Continue reading...]

Grabbing Control Of Our Finances + Rebuilding Our Savings

Before I got laid off, our savings account was terrific. We managed to save about $10,000 back in 2008, giving us a nice cushion after we bought our house. We also had one of those awesome online savings accounts which paid us about 3% interest versus the 0.01% our current bank is giving us. But then I lost my job and our savings went out the window! Of course it's great that we had it, because … [Continue reading...]

Do You Watch “Six Little McGhees” On OWN? These Sextuplets Look Like WORK!

I watched Jon and Kate Plus 8 before it became popular and never missed a minute of the Gosselins and their crazy life as the parents of two sets of multiples. But as the seasons wore on, the show became harder and harder to watch with all the tension that filled their house. After they split, I quit watching because the hurt and pain I'd seen on the show seemed too private to continue being … [Continue reading...]
