{Student Mama} Young Moms Have The Advantage In The Classroom

textbook studyingby Dr. William G. Perry

Yes, you read the title correctly. Young moms, who are motivated enough to enter a college classroom, have the advantage over “traditional” students. I can make this assertion after having been a professor in a university for 25 years.

Let me explain why determined young moms hold most of the cards when it comes to having a successful college career.

1. Young moms are intrinsically motivated. Young moms have given life to another and that life is dependent upon her. Young moms know what they do matters and that includes studying for the next exam. Enough said.

2. Young moms have a mature perspective. Typical students wonder, “Why do I have to learn that?” The young mom knows that’s the wrong question to ask. She knows that the person who put the subject matter in the curriculum did so for a reason. The young mom wants to know what is required for testing purposes.

3. Young moms ask questions. Young moms consistently ask questions of the instructors and professors. They urgently want to grasp the subject matter and to reserve as much energy as possible. They want to succeed.

4. Young moms stand out. Your “peers” in a college classroom are likely to be under age 20 and more concerned about the next party than writing a “persuasive paper” or learning a computer language. College professors quickly discover which students are interested in learning and those who are only there to get their ticket punched. Take advantage of your subtle notoriety.

5. Young moms are respected. Get to know your professor. He or she already notices your positive contributions to the class. Take the time to introduce yourself to the professor as a young mom. Announce your status with pride and state your goal. Be positive.

6. Young moms who ask for help get it. A young mom who asks her professor for help or about career opportunities will find her professor is honored to be of assistance.

7. Young moms are organized and know how to get it done! Every single mom that I’ve had the privilege of teaching was organized and looking for suggestions on how to fine tune her success. College professors love students who put forth effort and will normally bend Heaven and Earth to help.

8. Young moms are notorious listeners. Young moms have learned how to pay attention. They listen to what physicians tell their children, to employers because they want to keep their job(s) and they listen to their professors! I’ve even found myself tailoring a lecture to the young mom(s).

In summary, professors know that young moms have the advantage in the classroom. So should you. Your life’s experience gives you a clearer focus. You are a delight to teach. Stay positive, motivated and strong in the face of your daily challenges. Remember your mission. Every move you make is one step closer to your goal and an example to the little ones you love. They will respect you for it.

You’re already counted among the ranks of winners. You go, girl!

i’m not a mom yet, but i’m in my early 30s and am about to start a phd program. this article was a great reminder that being a mother while studying is not necessarily the liability that so many make it out to be. thanks for sharing!

  2. I know I was a better student as a mom than when I first entered college. I was in a different frame of mind, and the professor is absolutely right about reserving energy. I made sure to hyperfocus in class because I had a child or two at home to care for. Great article!

  3. Hiya,
I came across this today, and your blog is awesome! I am a young mummy, and there is such a bad perception of us young parents. I started a blog to try and get rid of the stereotype, and so far people seem to love it.

I featured this post in one of my posts today, lets share the blog love :)

  4. I believe it! Who else is more dedicated than a young mom really? :)

  5. Yes, I agree with you. Young moms have the advantage in the classroom since they are really motivated to achieve their goal. Because they want to achieve success, they want to learn very well on the class lessons.
