I Need A Vacation

As I sit back and really think about it, I haven’t been on a vacation (a real, honest-to-God vacation) in over 5 years. Last one that kind of counted was our honeymoon. But I was 6 months post-partum and had to lug my breast pump to Vegas so I could pump and dump every three hours. How sexy. How romantic.

Since then, I’ve been on plenty of airplanes, sure. I went to Disney with my daughter for two days for a blogger’s conference a few years ago, except I was inside in workshops most of the time and when I wasn’t, I was nursing my daughter back to health as she got sick shortly after we arrived. I went to D.C. a few times for conferences and speaking engagements but those are for business, not pleasure.

I took my kids on a weekend trip to a city that’s two hours away and that was fun. But it wasn’t the kind of “kick back in a beach chair, sip a fruity drink and let all your cares melt away” kind of vacation I need. (Everyone knows a vacation with the kids is not a vacation at all.)

So I’m hoping I can get away at some point this year. I might be scaring my husband with how often he catches me online searching for cheap flights. I keep looking at my budget, deciding not to go to Chipotle now so I can go to Jamaica later.

I have begun looking at ways to save money to get me there. We’ve got all this stuff in the house taking up room that I plan to sell – DVDs, appliances, baby clothes, baby gear. I know I won’t get rich, but I hope it will be enough to make a dent in the cost of the vacation.

‘Cause I need to go somewhere.

When was your last vacation, mamas? When are you taking your next one?

Comments

  1. We’ve made it a point to take a lot of over-nighters throughout the course of our marriage, because I knew that going to Jamaica (where we honeymooned) every year wasn’t feasible. I really wanted us to take another legitimate vacay this year, just the two of us, but decided to take the baby with us. We plan to go to Miami for a two-fer; to visit my family and hit the beach!

  2. I haven’t been anywhere without my kids (7 & 4). I know I’m pitiful, but that’s just who I am. I do think about going places without them, but I also think about how bored I am in this city that I am sure they would enjoy going somewhere and just having fun…something different than home.

  3. With my daughter – a cruise in December.
Without her – Dominican republic last June. We are trying to plan another trip without her in April or May.

  4. I haven’t had a vacation in so long, in fact I was just telling my husband last night that I needed to get away. I don’t think he quit gets it, but I need one before I go insane.

  5. We try to go to one or two vacation a year. Last year was Disney of course for the kiddo and San Diego for just “us”. I don’t have anything planned yet for this year. We were talking about Jamaica too with one of our couple friends in Akron, so maybe that will pan out.

  6. I have never taken a vacation. I am thinking about taking a mini one to a blogger’s conference in august. its only in manhattan but it would be nice to get away from my house for a couple of days even if I’m only in the next borough. Tara, ur making me wonder about whether or not it actually counts though.
