On Motherhood: The Crumbs And The Cupcake

As I was struggling to jam my son’s foot into a too-small sneaker this morning, I groaned as I realized, yup, fall is upon us and with that, he needs new shoes.

I admit I don’t enjoy the little stuff of parenthood. The bedtime baths, the clipping of my daughter’s nails every other morning (why do those suckers grow so fast?), the cleaning of the mysterious gook off the inside of my car.

But I rather enjoy the big stuff. Selecting a school for my daughter, stocking the house with books upon books upon books, and teaching my kids (at 4 and 3) how to cook.

I call the little stuff  “the crumbs.” The big stuff is the “the cupcake.” If you want to eat delicious cupcakes, you gotta deal with the crumbs.

  1. Ahh, yes! What’s a cupcake without the crumbs!

  2. I enjoy both. But there are times when I don’t want to deal with either. I’m glad that Moo is getting to that age where she can help out with some of the bigger stuff like cleaning up after herself, helping with dinner and other chores around the house.

  3. AMEN! I could do without the little stuff from time to time too, but if I don’t do it, who else will. Right?
