Reading Is Fundamental – But You Already Knew That, Right?

Day two of introducing you to the YML blogging crew is in full effect! Today we have a post from Gerri, who’s as passionate about teaching your kids the importance of a good book as much as I am. I’m so happy to have her on board – I’m sure she’s going to be a be great help in helping our (already smart) kids get smarter!

Hey, there! I’m Gerri! A little about me? I’ll try my best: I wear several hats, with my main ones being Mommy, wife, and Mrs. Kimble (explained in a sec). I love Jesus, family time, reading, reality TV, checking out blogs, traveling, laughing, and food.

When I’m not doing these things, I teach high school, a career I love dearly (which is why I’m “Mrs. Kimble” for eight hours a day). I’m also a student. I have a Bachelors in Computer Information Systems, a Masters in Education, and am currently working on my Education Specialist degree.

I live a full life, and some days I wonder if I’m crazy for juggling it all. But I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

I blog about my family life, but had been looking for ways I could blog about other things that interest me. One of those interests is pretty new. My mother loves to read, I grew up loving to read, and my two-year-old happens to love books, too. So after becoming a mommy, a new hobby was born: finding good children’s books (and not necessarily from a teacher’s perspective, but a mommy’s perspective).

It all started with a quest to find a good Christmas book for my daughter. Not one about presents, Santa, or reindeer, but one that told about the birth of Jesus. The problem is it had to engage my toddler (catchy content, great pictures, etc.). After finally finding the perfect book, I thought it would be great to share it with other moms. Since then, I’ve blogged about other books and book bargains, and am glad to now have the opportunity to share my finds with TheYoungMommyLife community.

I believe books are magical and special and should be a part of a child’s everyday life. So, like most mommies, I’m always looking for a good book to add to the shelf. I hope that not only can I recommend something your family will enjoy, but build a community of mommies who share their own book finds! So, Young Mommies, let’s get ready to share!

  1. A good friend recently posted on Facebook how much she was smiling at the sound of her son’s laughter coming from his room as he was engaged in an obviously pretty funny read. I get those same reactions from my daughter when she’s into a good book. The back seat of my car looks like a library. Every time we leave the house she brings a book, and reads to me in between singing along to the radio, lol.

One of the books that we are currently reading is from the Rainbow Magic series and is called Emma the Easter Fairy by Daisy Meadows. I picked this book especially for her because Easter was approaching and her name is Emma :)

    • Barbara, I know exactly the book you’re talking about! When I was searching for an Easter book for my daughter, this one caught my eye online AND in the store. I remember it being very colorful (and it had a little brown girl on the cover)! What a fun Easter book for your Emma! (My little one is just two years old, so she wasn’t quite ready for it, but it’s definitely on my list for another year.) Thank you for sharing your book find!

  2. We love reading time in our house! My son’s current obsession: Knuffle Bunny and Knuffle Bunny Too. I can’t wait to see what books you suggest.

    • Thanks for sharing, Alicia! I just did a quick search on Knuffle Bunny, and it yielded some great reviews. Definitely something we’re going to check out.

I think my next post here will ask mommies to just share their child’s favorite book. I think we all can start building our wish lists from there. :)

  3. Ms. Prince says:

Reading is my favorite thing to do and I am trying my best to pass the love of reading to my two sons. We read each night but put in extra hours during the summer to keep my soon to be 4th grader up and running. My 3 year old loves Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do you See and the Very Hungry Caterpillar. I am a readaholic!

    • Thanks for sharing, Ms. Prince. :)

I’m a read-a-holic, too, though these days I only have time for textbooks and children’s books! You’re doing a fantastic job of keeping your boys in the books in the summer. Summer reading is super important (I’ll be doing a post on it soon), so it’s refreshing to hear from a mom who is true to it.
