Review: Disney’s The Princess and the Frog

So after all the buildup and all the anticipation, I took my daughter to see the Princess and the Frog on Saturday afternoon, where she proceeded to get antsy halfway into the movie and we had to leave early. But, like a true fiend, I went back that evening with my sisters.

I’m so glad I did.

For so many women, this movie was more than just another Disney film. This was a movie that many of us already knew we were going to put on our “gotta buy on DVD” list before we even saw it.

I saw it and loved it.

To me, there were so many things to like about the movie: the way the filmmakers presented New Orleans, while capturing the Disney magic. The way Tiana was a hard-working, no-nonsense woman with a gift for great gumbo and a dream of owning her own restaurant. The way her parents loved her so fiercely and unconditionally. The way that the Prince and Tiana fell in love. Even the way Tiana kept her morals even when tempted with the thing she wanted most in this world.

Admittedly there were a few scenes that had me questioning how appropriate this would be for the toddler set, but other than that, the Princess and the Frog is a bonafide hit in my eyes.

I know plenty of people who had issues with the fact that Princess Tiana is a frog for a good portion of the movie. My 3-year-old still doesn’t get “where Princess Tiana went.” But I think once you see the movie, that becomes a smaller issue as the other good qualities of the movie balance it out.

So go see it this weekend, if you haven’t seen it already. I know Avatar comes out this week as well (ugh!) but let’s give the Princess and the Frog a strong showing its second week!

Have you seen the movie? Did you like it?

  1. personally, i cant wait for the day when skin color is no longer seen as an issue, where all cultures are represented and celebrated and you can take your kid to a G movie!

I haven’t seen it yet but am looking forward to it this weekend. fingers crossed that I make it.

to Erykah I know exactly how you feel. I often wonder when this part of Dr. Kings dream will come to pass… “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” so sad that we aren’t their yet.

  3. Nice review. I haven’t seen it, and will probably go see it alone because my daughter is only 1, and my sister, mom, and best friend don’t care about it :(

  4. Harmony and I absolutely loved it! (I know she’s only 5 months old but she talked to the screen [quietly] for most of the movie which means she gives it two tiny thumbs up!) The only thing that got to me was how the firefly had buck teeth and a big butt and talked like a slave. Other than that I thought it was great! I would definately see it again. And again. And again. And buy the dvd when it comes out. And the soundtrack. :]

    • @T – Based on the previews I thought the firefly was odd too, but from hearing from folks down in Louisana, it seems they got the firefly just about perfect in terms of looks and accent (says he’s based on some Creole/Cajuns down there). *shrug* I was contemplating taking my daughter to see it again this weekend. Might want to since Avatar is coming out. Crap!
