[2015 Self-Care Retreat] Lessons On Living Boldly With Esther Boykin, LMFT

Over September 18-20, 20 women gathered in Alexandria, Virginia for a weekend of rest and relaxation at the first annual self-care retreat. Over the next few days I'll be sharing some of the biggest lessons and aha moments we all felt as we gathered in a no-judgement zone.  Day 1: Lessons on Living Boldly, by Esther Boykin, licensed family and marriage therapist  I met Esther in person … [Continue reading...]

Four Reasons Pixar’s “Inside Out” Hit Me Right In The Feels #SummerWatchathon

Out of my top 10 movies of all time, any genre or any time period, three of them are animated movies. Currently "The Princess & The Frog" (for fulfilling my childhood dream of having a Disney princess who looked like me and then ALSO giving me a Disney princess who had my work ethic), "The Lion King," and "The Incredibles" all are on the top of my list. I never miss a … [Continue reading...]

Musings Of A First Time Mommy-To-Be

by Ashanti Berkeley As of this week I am officially 26 weeks pregnant and I feel great. I am beyond excited to meet my baby girl and be the best mother I can possible be. In the beginning I wasn't sure if I can take care of another human being mentally and financially, but I later realized at this point I had no choice—she was already on her way. The support from my family … [Continue reading...]

Here’s Why There’s No Such Thing As “Glamorizing” Teen Pregnancy

"Yes, we should support teen mothers, but we shouldn't, really, glamorize teen pregnancy, you know..."  Let me be blunt: It's not possible to glamorize teen pregnancy. It's not. It's like glamorizing 40+ pregnancy, or a pregnancy of multiples. Teen pregnancy just IS. What people are really concerned about is whether we make teen pregnancy look easy. Fun. Worthwhile. But these are all the … [Continue reading...]

8 Brief Observations About Fitness From An Out-Of-Shape Mom Who’s Trying To Do Better

(That just might be my wordiest post title ever.) 1. I'm happy Planet Fitness is only $10 a month. They have a second tier plan that's $20 a month but I decided to stick with the basic plan until I feel like I've got my workout routine down. 2. It is really hard to work out at home. I have an elliptical and a stationary bike in my basement, along with nearly every DVD Jillian Michaels has. … [Continue reading...]

How Lupita Nyong’o Is Teaching Us To Love Ourselves Again

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past few months, you should definitely recognize the name Lupita Nyong'o. If the name doesn't ring a bell, she's currently Hollywood's "it" girl, who's turning heads this awards season in beautiful and well-chosen gowns all while becoming a household name from her breakout role in the blockbuster "12 Years A Slave." She's not just being … [Continue reading...]

First Day Of School For My Kids And I Can’t Even Deal

Sweet baby Jesus. I can't take this. As a work-at-home mom, I've been counting down the days until both of my kids are in school every day. I love them with all of my heart, but it was very, very hard to get any work done while they were home with me, leaving me hunched over my keyboard at midnight with frightening regularity. I was getting tired. But now? Now that my baby is actually … [Continue reading...]

Cleveland Three-Year-Old Found Dead In Local Landfill; Police Zero In On 20-Year-Old Mom As Suspect

This story has been the lead story at every news station in my city for the past four days. Three-year-old Emilliano Terry was reported missing by his 20-year-old mother Camilia Terry. Her initial story was that she had taken two of her kids to the park (her 5-year-old and the 3-year-old) and while pushing one of the kids on the swing, her three-year-old disappeared. The community rallied … [Continue reading...]
