Sometimes I forget I’m as young as I am

I have a coworker who is a dad. Has several wonderful kids who always provide good anecdotes for him to share at our staff meetings. They’re hilarious.

We’re chit-chatting about our kids and he asks do my kids watch Barney.

“Oh, goodness, no,” I say with a shudder.

He obviously didn’t get my Barney-hate.

“Well,” he said, jokingly, “God forbid your kids learn how to say please and thank you.”

We shared a quick smile and then I realized: Shoot, does he realize I grew up on Barney?

Barney hit the scene in 1992, when I was barely six. I grew up watching as my TV viewing was restricted to what my younger sisters could watch. I remember the original cast members, what the original set looked like, all the songs, the first time I saw Baby Bop. I mean, really, I don’t think I missed an episode between 1992 and 1997. My kids don’t watch Barney because I watched Barney and I’m sick of it.

It just made me think: Damn, I’m REALLY a young mom. That conversation just made it clear as day.

What about you? Have you had a similar moment when you realized, “Crap, I’m a good 10-15 years younger than the other parents I know. Whoa!”

  1. Haha @ Barney-hate. My daughter doesn’t watch Barney for that same reason… ironically my age moments come when my older mommy friend will say something and then be like, “damn, I keep forgetting you’re so young. You probably know nothing about that.” The funny part is that most of the time I do know!

  2. lol goodness, Barney is still around?!!! Im a Barney hater as well… didnt realize little children were still watching that silly show. :-) Hehe

  3. What did he mean by “God forbid they learn how to say please and thank you”? Is he referring to a song? I kinda remember a song like that haha…like you my middle sister was OBSESSED with Barney and I refuse to introduce him to my children if he is still around! My 8yr old sister loves the Disney channel thankfully so I’m not forced to watch him these days lol
