A new form of birth control…

One of the peculiar things about young mommies is that we tend to be so overwhelmed by having a baby that we swear up and down to anyone who asks that we are done having babies. One is enough, we say. Just one kid for us, thanks. We’re done. Finito.

But inevitably, we have other one, usually fairly close in age in our firstborn. I count myself in the population of moms who’ve done this. My kids are 21 months apart, which isn’t bad, but isn’t the age gap I would have liked.

This time, I’m done. So to make sure, I’m going to the doctor tomorrow to get my IUD placed. What’s an IUD? Well, according to WebMD,

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a long-term birth control method. Unlike IUDs that were used in the 1970s, present-day IUDs are small, safe, and highly effective.1

An IUD is a small, T-shaped plastic device that is wrapped in copper or contains hormones. The IUD is inserted into your uterus by your doctor. A plastic string tied to the end of the IUD hangs down through the cervix into the vagina…The string is also used by your doctor to remove the IUD.

I’ll be writing you in this space this week to let you know how the insertion went. Hopefully, it will be a good report.
