ask the young mommy readers: on the radio

When I’m in the car with my kids, I try to make it a point to listen to the jazz station. (Once I get this new car, then maybe I can actually play some CDs or hook up my iPod, huh?)

Some days I forget and then all of a sudden, I hear Lil’ Wayne talking about…hell, whatever he raps about. I really don’t know.

I quickly flip the station and throw a glance at the babies in the backseat. My kids are only 3 and 1, so I don’t feel like they need to be exposed to that music now, if ever.

I want them to grow up and appreciate GOOD music, the kind that makes you cry if you hear it performed live, the kind that still sounds sweet the 1,453 time you’ve heard it. I’m sorry, but Lil’ Wayne ain’t it.

So I’m asking you: What do your kids listen to in the car? Do you keep it on a certain channel? Hook up your iPod so you have complete control over what the little ones hear?

Comments

  1. Yes! Exactly. Kids are like sponges. For us, we pretty much stay on the Christian station or use CD’s. That way it is ALWAYS clean, I never have to worry about harmful messages/words and plus it teaches her about Jesus :-)

  2. i TOTALLY control what’s played. i usually use my IPod which has everything from the Laurie Berkner Band to Elmo to the Backyardigans or we use cd’s…and we have oodles of those. my daughter repeats EVERYTHING!!!!! one day last week my hubby left the file cabinet open and that irked me, so when i came out and saw it, i said to myself (not knowing she was behind me)…whats wrong with him leaving this mess? well, when he called that morning, sure enough, my daughter says to him, daddy, what’s wrong with you. you messy! so, um, yeah….gotta keep her ears in check, lol

    • @Mrs. W- Kids do repeat everything! I have to watch how I talk to my husband when I’m upset because this little girl mimics me too well. “Daddy, get out my face!” Oops.

  3. Absolutely! My lil one is only 7 weeks, but babies learn by imitating what they see and hear. Her daddy plays the drums for a jazz/neo-soul band so that’s what we listen too, along with some gospel, old school, and r&b. I expose her to good music from real, talented artists (alicia keys, michael jackson, mary j blige, yolanda adams, etc.) because that’s what I grew up on. Lil Wayne is definately not in the playlist…having four different babies by four different women, three of which are all less than a year apart…what kind of role model is that?? But anyway…I want my daughter to know what good music is, so a lot of this new stuff is not played around her. There will be no stanky leggin’, supermannin’, ricky bobbyin’ foolishness in my house!

    • @T – “There will be no stanky leggin’, supermannin’, ricky bobbyin’ foolishness in my house!” AMEN!!!! And PREACH about the Lil’ Wayne stuff – I didn’t really like him before, but four babies by four different women, three of them the same age almost? Eww.

  4. Nowadays I don’t even listen to the radio when I’m by myself, lol. I don’t think it’s safe for me to roll my eyes so much while driving.

Sometimes I’ll get bored of what cds I have with me (or my iPod dies) and I’ll click over to the radio, but I tend to switch it right off. I have a few Elmo tracks on my iPod, but my daughter (2) loves R&B and sings along. And her dad was in a rock band, so she likes listening to that stuff (I don’t, lol) because of the instruments. There are some songs we listen to that I wouldn’t want her to hear, so I save that for the rare times she’s not in the car seat behind me. :)
