Baby, It’s Cold Outside

If you’re lucky, you live in some part of the country where you won’t immediately turn into Frosty the second you head outside. If you’re like me, you’re pretty much in hibernation mode until spring thaw.

This weather has been doing a number on my family’s skin. My kids already suffer from excema (I hate it so much that I don’t care if I spell it wrong) so all this dry, frigid weather is just making it worse. And my normally dry skin is crying out for moisture like I’ve never seen before.

I’m tinkering with a routine that may help us all, using potions and lotions we already own:

Gentle Hydrating Cleanser

1) Eucerin Gentle Hydrating Cleanser – I don’t know why I never tried Eucerin before, but once my doc suggested it for the babies’ skin conditions, I discovered it works wonders. Combine this cleanser and its moisture rich calmin creme and dry skin will be gone in a flash.

2) 100% cocoa butter and 100% shea butter – Both of these products helped with my dry skin issues, but it’s vitally important that you get the 100% kind. I don’t know what they add to it, but it’s just not as rich and creamy with all the added junk.

3) Johnson’s baby oil gel – I especially like this right out the shower, when my skin is still damp. The lavender kind is a little extra luxury on a busy day.

What about you readers? What do you use to tame your dry skin?

Someone told me many years ago that I should always check the alcohol content in lotion before buying it. Surprisingly, many lotions out there, especially the “luxurious” kinds, have some kind of alcohol(e.g., Cetyl alcohol) near the top of the list of ingredients. When you apply these lotions, your hands feel smooth for a little while, and then the alcohol makes them dry again so you feel the urge to put on more. Often baby oil works better than most lotions because it’s hard to find lotions out there that don’t have the alcohol.

  2. I have super dry skin that absorbs lotions like right after I put it on. After an hour it looks like I dipped my legs in flour–during the winter. When I had my extended hospital stay they provided with this amazing stuff. I researched the company and ordered some since it was so amazing. It’s too hard to get up right now due to the cast & brat laying on me, so I can’t tell u the name. It works wonders though. It’s thick like vaseline and is the only thing to keep me moisturized. I used to use the baby oil gels, but I don’t like how greasy and shinny it would make me look lol

  3. Cetaphil (in the jar) is the BEST!

  4. I know about that OHIO weather since Im from Cleveland! My daughter skin is oh so sensative and pure shea butter makes nice and soft without losing any of the moisture.
