I went out and spent around $165 on a changing table when I was pregnant with my oldest. It has gotten some good use, but still I wonder if it is really necessary. As my toddler daughter and extremely chunky infant son (said with love of course) have gotten bigger, it’s been more of a pain to lift them onto the changing table.
This diaper caddy from JJ Cole seems like it would be a good (cheap!) alternative. There’s room for diapers, wipes, lotions, and anything else you need to clean your snookems. Plus, it’s cute enough that you don’t necessarily have to scramble to put the thing away.
Besides, what do you do with changing tables once they’ve outlived their usefulness?
I use my old changing tables for storeage….bins or baskets of toy for the kids and stuff on the top shelf you don’t want them in all the time or you can use is for storage of clothes…which I also have done….just some advice for future use out of it…
I think that’s a great idea. Mine is the kind with the changing pad on top, with two open shelves on the bottom, which will be perfect for baskets of some sort later on. I just hope it will hold up after my son gets done with it. He’s making that thing cry out for mercy already and he’s only six months old!
I didn’t bother with a changing table, though I do have a changing pad. I re-arranged some things and had space on top of my dresser for it. So I have my own ghetto changing area. But at least when he doesn’t need it anymore, I can use the space to put up more pictures or some of my bath & body works
child please! i never used a changing table, but i always had my handy dandy changing pad with me to use in the house and out in public. and i never, ever, ever used those changing tables in public restrooms. most of the time i had my son’s stroller so i’d go right into the handicap stall, put my changing pad under him while he in the stroller and changed him there. those public things are so gross. i guess if you don’t mind spending the money, a changing table is okay, but to me it just wasn’t worth it.
Thanks for some great advise. I was debating getting a dresser that converts to a change table for my first – not just for the change top but because we desperately need more storage. Those JJ Cole bins are a great idea.

I actually found a “changing table” that someone put out for grabs when we moved into our apt. I didn’t even know it was a changing table until I saw it at Toys R Us once, lol. Sooo, never used it as such. Miss J is 5 now, and we use it as a book shelf for her little library… she uses the drawers for storing her old baby blankets, which are now her baby’s blankets.
I think a changing table only really comes in handy if you’ve had a c-section, because then you can put baby at your level to change them.
Its hard for me to get down on the ground to change diapers, thanks to my bone disorder & chronic pain. So the change pad table has been my savior! But I guess its personal preference, although that diaper caddy is cute!
