MagJunkie: Parents, February 2009

where I put my journalism degree to work and devour the latest parenting magazines so you don’t have to! Parents February 2009 cover

Parents, February 2009, $3.50

Cover: Same old, same old. Man, am I tired of seeing the same smiling faces month after month. All the pink is pretty though, but it’s a February issue – what do you expect?

Useful advice:

  • On pages 30-32, there’s a ton of tips on how help your babies with the stomach virus.

Worthwhile articles:

  • “The 5-Second Discipline Fix” (pg.36) – Surprisingly, I found this one very helpful, maybe because I’m dealing with this now. It’s all about how to talk to kids so they’ll listen. I’m guilty of ending every sentence with, “Okay?” so much that my daughter has started doing it. In my quest to be nice to her, I haven’t mastered how to talk to her in a way that is both firm and kind.
  • “Baby it’s cold out there” (pg. 86) – Good tips for taking care of baby’s skin in the winter.

Skip it:

  • “Use your noodles” (pg. 42) – It’s a good concept (five new ways to cook pasta) but the recipes looked a little bland. Kids usually don’t like a lot of spice, but they do like flavor.

Rating: 2 pacifers out of 4

Did you read this issue? What did you think?

1 pacifer – skip it entirely

2 pacifers – browse it at the bookstore or library

3 pacifers – keep some articles for reference later

4 pacifers – Good job, magazine editors. Darn good job.

Comments

  1. I haven’t opened my copy yet. It is sitting on the pile among the other mags I need to get to. Seems as if I am not missing much.

  2. love this!! i had a similar thing on my blog called zine freak because i am an absolute lover of glossies. (i worked for one for almost 10 years so you’d think i’d be sick of them by now! haha…) have you seen baby couture?? i can’t afford a darn thing in it, but i love the magazine. 😉
