[Love Letters] Happy 5th Birthday, Thomas!

Dear Thomas,

When I was pregnant with you, I wanted to find out if you were a boy or girl. Your daddy insisted we wait and have it be a surprise. Even now, five years later, I wish I had known that I was about to become the mother of a beautiful, chubby baby boy.

My life has not been the same since you entered it. Your energy is infectious. You give me a smile right when I need it. You can sense my moods and know exactly what to say to cheer me up, even though that’s not your job.

And as you grow, you continue to amaze me. Right now, it looks like you’ll be a chef/restaurant owner. You tell me of your plans for your restaurant, The Blue Corral. Your current business plan is that all the food is free and people can order whatever they want. (Your sister wants to come on board and be your business manager – I can’t say I blame her.)

But I’m thrilled because you asked me to be the chef because, according to you, I “make the bestest food ever.” I talk about building my legacy and working hard on my career but do you know how quickly I would drop all of that to be the chef at your restaurant???? In a heartbeat, baby.

This of course is why your father and I fought so hard for you to be able to go to kindergarten this year, rather than wait an additional year.  You’re smart. We all know this. What I want you to know is that I will always have your back. Always. In every situation. I’ll be there.

I wanted to ramble on and on about how much I love you, but I hope you already know. I try to hug you as much as I can, and I notice you don’t climb up in my lap as often as you used to. You’re more interested in wrestling or asking me to download another game on the iPad. You’re growing up, as much as it pains me to say. But I’m liking this “big boy” Thomas. He’s fun.

I try to build you up as much as I can because I want you to be full of self-confidence by the time you leave my house. You and your sister are my greatest joys. I am so, so blessed that I have the privilege of being your mother.

Love,

Mom
