Disclaimer: This post is brought to you by the makers of Pine-Sol® products. I have partnered with them to spread the word about the “When Life Gets Tough, Women Rise Above It” campaign and sweepstakes. To enter the sweepstakes and win a variety of great prizes, visit http://www.WomenRiseAboveIt.com. All opinions and stories are my own.

I wrote last year about my daughter’s teacher suggesting my daughter may have a mild form of selective mutism. It’s an anxiety disorder where children are physically unable to speak in certain social situations (meeting new people, being in the midst of a crowd, etc.).

My daughter has always been quieter than most children and she is usually the one to stay by my side if we are out in a new environment, while her brother runs 100 mph into it with no hesitation. She has made incredible strides since we began working with her on increasing her comfort and reducing her anxiety.

I try to reinforce to my daughter that she has a lot of gifts to share with the world and that as her parents, we are always behind her 100% in whatever she chooses to explore. She is now halfway through second grade and every day we see her becoming more and more comfortable in who she is. I know she will never be the social butterfly who flits from friend to friend and party to party, but she has grown tremendously since we first discovered what was bothering her.

I want both of my children to grow up and feel confident in whatever they do, that when life hands them a challenge, they are more than able to handle it and come out on top. I want them to be able to “rise above” any obstacles!

This is yet another reason why I’ve joined Pine-Sol® in their efforts to recognize and celebrate the remarkable women among us in its “When Life Gets Tough, Women Rise Above It” campaign.
