{YML Voices} “You CAN Do It” – A Young Mom Graduates From College

Today’s guest post is from a reader from waaaay back, Ms. Carla Buckner. I remember when she left a comment a few years ago and I followed her back to her blog and just got comfortable. She wrote in a way that was completely open and honest and I could relate to her struggles as a young mother. She sent me this guest post after graduating college this past week and I could not be prouder!! Carla writes, “I’m hoping that I can be an inspiration to mommies in school and just mommies with goals they’re trying to attain.” You are, Carla! You ARE!

by Carla Buckner

So, I did it. I completed my last class and graduated college. I received my Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Information Systems.

July has been a tough month and I’m glad it’s coming to an end. From being robbed on top of other things, it’s been an emotionally, physically, and mentally challenging time for me. But, despite all of that, I made it. I persevered. I’m still standing.

The last six years have been tough. There are times where I thought I’d never finish. There are times where I wondered why I chose such a difficult and technical major such as computer science. And there were so many times where I wanted to consider work with a regular schedule just so I could live a normal life and get off from work when the sun was still up.

But as I reflect on my journey, I can honestly say that it was worth all the doubting.. all the tears.. and all those late nights. The feeling you feel when you finally reach that goal you’ve been working so hard toward acheiving for SO long is an amazing feeling.

To all the mommies currently in school, working towards your degree, DON’T GIVE UP! Take as long as you need. School is not a race, but rather, it’s a marathon. Complete it at your own pace and learn as much as you can.

And remember, Proverbs 16:3.

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your
plans.

Graduate School begins next month. Yep, I’m not stopping. Before you know it, I’ll have that DBA title and you’ll all know me as that Database Administrator that everyone talks about. God isn’t through with me yet!

Carla is a fantastic young mommy who blogs at Est1987.

Congrats to her! Wonderful story! No circumstance or situation can block us from our goals!!!!

I had my first child at 19, and by 23, I was married with 3 children. By 27, I was a divorced mom of 3 and a domestic violence survivor. I graduated cum laude with a BS at 28, and received a substantial schoalrship towards my MPA, which I am currently working on.

There are soooo many stories out there like Ms. Buckner’s. Too often women in general (young moms, married, divorced, single, with kids, w/o kids) downplay their accomplishments. Forums like this are very important and we cannot take our stories for granted. We must continue to tell our stories and inspire eachother.

    • Mrs Dee, I couldn’t agree more with your statement that women tend to downplay their accomplishments. I almost did the same thing when I completed my MBA but a couple of my friends wouldn’t let me do that. I had the most amazing grad party this past weekend to celebrate – something I would NOT have done without the push from genuine friends!

  2. What a great and inspiring post! Perseverance is everything.

  3. Congratulations, Carla! This is wonderful news!!

  4. Go ‘head now! So proud of you Carla!!! Keep pushing lady!

  5. I am happy for her! I love her determination – and she’s going STRAIGHT into grad school! My hat (and my mortar board) goes off to her! I am also happy to be part of Class of 2012 with my MBA in Global Management. Five years of sleepless nights and MANY papers is OVER!

I’m so afraid that i’ll become overwhemled with a new baby and a school schedule, but this story gave me the confidence boost that i needed! Pray for me y’all lol
