{YML Voices} How This Young Mama Launched Her Own Business

by Kanesha Morrison

It is an honor to be writing for the blog that made me feel like being a young mama is something to be proud of!

I am a mommy of two. My oldest is 3 years old and my youngest is 10 months. They are my motivation to be all I can be. I took the bull by the horns and promised them both on their first day of life that I would fight to make their life the best! I wanted them to have everything I didn’t have.

I finished my two-year degree and I am working toward my four year degree. I knew I needed an education to provide a better life for them. My next thought was how I can be there for them at all times, even though being a stay-at-home mom was not for me. I like being a busy bee and I wanted to work. I wanted to be there when they were sick. If a field trip was coming up, I wanted to be there.

So I wanted to be a work-at-home mom. I knew I had to start working toward that goal now to be in a position to be there for them when they were older. I tried different things—some worked and some didn’t, but I wasn’t giving up. I tried a blog, but I wasn’t consistent enough for it. I tried a home-based company, but I got bored with the same products. I was online one day and one of my friends liked a Facebook page. She was posting pictures of clothing and people were buying it. I wanted to get involved in that.

I did not know the growing pains of starting my own business, Blingy Girl Things. I lost a lot of money on what Dave Ramsey calls stupid tax. I am working on the business all day, growing it, and trying to get the word out there, and then I am up all night doing homework and trying to keep up in school. I have had customer complaints and sometimes a messy house, but I am keeping the end goal in mind. My kids. Their smile. Their happiness. Enough said. Mama has to do what mama has to do.

If that means no sleep for the next two years to finish this degree so be it. If that means I am having to have sale after sale until my items are being brought on their own full price, oh well. This is for my kids, I will do what I have to do. Enough said. My point is DON’T ever give up on your dreams and goals. You still matter. Let your kids be the reason you overcome.

  1. Your story is so similar to my life. I’m a wife and a mom of two. We have a 3-year-old girl and an 11-month old boy. I decided to quit my job when I was pregnant with our first to be a stay-at-home mom. Although being a mom is the hardest job in the world, I wanted to do something that would secure my family’s future. So I wrote a children’s book. I was blessed that a well-known company published my book and distributed it to all major bookstores nationwide.

I admire women who focus on building a solid future for their kids. Your story is very inspiring. God bless!

Reading this post made my heart smile. I am not married and I have two young boys, 4 and 1.I’m also in school pursuing my paralegal degree and once I finish that I’m going to finish my Communication studies degree. At times it seems like I shouldn’t have the choice to be a stay-at-home mama, but because I am all that my boys have I need to be available for them at all times. The place that I live is a smaller scale city, but I am determined to build my errand service business. I love the fact that no matter what you are pushing through the rough nights, the tons of homework, and the unpredictable nature of owning your own business. You are an inspiration to women who are young mothers, but refuse to give up on living the ife of their dreams. Thank you.

Oh and Mrs. Tara thank you for your continuous inspirations, motivation and reaffirming the belief that young mothers can have it all. From a fellow GOALdigger I appreciate you.
