Love letter to my 2-year-old

Dear Thomas,

I’ve spent the past two years trying to give you a nickname and the only two that stuck are:  Thomas-Thomas (because you get into everything I always say your name twice) and Chunky Boy (because you’re so chunky). Let’s go with Chunky Boy for purposes of this blog post, okay? :)

So, Chunky Boy. Here we are. Two years after you made your entrance into the world and my life hasn’t been the same since. You are by far my biggest source of joy (next to your sister) and my biggest energy drain (next to your sister). You keep me going, you keep my laughing and man, oh, man do I love seeing you smile.

You are a crazy little boy, though, do you know that? You run in circles around the living room, giggling to yourself and falling out as soon as you make yourself dizzy. If another little boy grabs your toy, you snatch it back and tell him to “Walk away!” I love that you give the other kids a warning before you lay the smack down. We gotta work on that, though, okay?

Your appetite is legendary. I have YET to see you turn down food. I knew you were going to be my eating buddy when your first full sentence was “Mommy, is dinner ready yet?” at about 16 months. I almost dropped the dishes I was holding when I heard you say that! Smart AND loves food? My heart swelled three sizes that day. You are my baby for real!!! You keep going and going and going and you’ve got the build to match. It’s so cute to see you turn into your daddy. You and your daddy have the same face, the same walk, the same mannerisms, the same emotional make-up. It’s really awesome to see.

And you are such a good little brother. You are always looking out for your big sister, giving her hugs and kisses every night before you go to bed and if she says, “I love you, Thomas,” I know you’ll always say, “I love you, too, Yaya,” in response. You are such a little gentleman and I’m telling you, it’s just IN you. I haven’t had to teach you how to be kind and loving – you knew how to embody those qualities from birth.

I will always love you and I will always be in your corner. I don’t make many promises to people but I will make this promise to you. I will ALWAYS listen to you and I will ALWAYS be someone you can count on. I will do whatever I can to make your life better for as long as there is air in my lungs and my heart still beats. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS.

Happy Birthday, Baby!

Mommy
