Advice from someone who’s been there…

Harriet, a more experienced mom I met over at the Mom Bloggers Club, wrote a new post about the 10 things those under 35 (read: all you new mommies!) should know.

I found her list to be very comforting. I hope you do too!
Harriet writes:

I am offering the following as a pseudo big sister. I’ve been where many of you are. We all have our opinions, thank goodness, so take it for what it’s worth.

1. Kids will potty train when they are physically ready. This is probably not going to happen before the age of two, so save your energy for something else. Look at it this way. Your child will probably be potty trained by the time they go to college.

2. Kids will learn to read when they are ready. Any time before kindergarten is usually the sign of an insecure and overly eager parent to the rest of us. Again, your child will probably be reading by the time they go off to college.

3. Spanking should never be the first resort. It is way too easy to fall back on and requires little, if any, cognitive brain cells to do.

4. Breast feeding is a personal decision. However, I have to tell you that it is a no-brainer. Breast milk is the perfect temperature, always sterile, and full of goodies that your child needs. Plus, you get to bond. Also, consult your physician if you plan on doing it past 3 years old.

5. SAHM’s need not stress about keeping their house clean to make up for not bringing in the cash. Seriously, the people that you think “may” stop by, rarely do.

6. Material possessions rarely make up for 1:1 contact. That is, all the toys in the world mean nothing in comparison to a play-doh date with a parent.

7. While you are raising your kids, your marriage will be challenged. Learn how to make lemonade. Unless, you are in abusive relationship.

8. It is never okay to abuse a spouse. Abusers rarely stop abusing without therapy.

9. Know when to stick up for your child. If you don’t who will?

10. Take it one day at a time. Appreciate the moment. Be grateful.

She’s got some cool tips. Now, does she have any advice on how to breastfeed in public smoothly?
